Doctor: GOP governors' anti-mask mandates' 'wrong thing to do'

Education secretary warns that politicizing masks could lead to in-person school disruption

Aug. 6 - ...Cardona reiterated his message during an interview with CNN's Ana Cabrera later Thursday, saying any Covid-19-related school closures would be "disappointing."

The Department of Education, he said, will work with Florida and Texas, adding, "They're our students, too. We'll get farther if we work together."

"The message, really, is look at the data," he said, going on to applaud Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who has said he regrets a law banning mask requirements in schools...     quoted from

Students Need To Be In Classrooms, With Masks, This Fall, Education Secretary Says

Aug. 2 - U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona has a message for schools across the country ahead of the new school year: Students need to be in classrooms.

"That's where students learn best," Cardona told NPR's A Martínez. "Schools are more than just places where students learn how to read and write — they're communities. They're like second families to our students."

On Monday, the U.S. Education Department will release a roadmap for the return to school, encouraging districts to invest in social and emotional support for students and outlining ways to "accelerate academic achievement."

The roadmap also recommends that school systems follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's masking guidance for K-12 schools, which the agency revised last week, recommending "universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to schools, regardless of vaccination status."

Mask mandate bans will make it hard for some schools to follow the roadmap

Following those masking recommendations will be next to impossible for some districts where state legislators have stepped in. Texas, South Carolina and Iowa have all passed laws banning schools from requiring students and staff to wear masks. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said last week that the CDC's recommendations wouldn't change that. In South Carolina, Gov. Henry McMaster tweeted that "personal responsibility" was the answer...     more

PLA holds large drills amid military threats

Aug. 6 - At a time when the US is holding large-scale military exercises targeting China, and several countries including the UK, Germany and India plan to send or have already sent warships to the South China Sea, China announced it will hold a military exercise from Friday to Tuesday in the South China Sea, setting up a vast navigation restriction zone some observers said resembles a drill conducted last year in which the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) reportedly conducted live-fire "aircraft carrier killer" anti-ship ballistic missiles exercises.

While details on the upcoming drill remain speculative, it will serve as a response to the recent provocations, demonstrating that China has "hunting rifles ready against the wolves" that hunger for China's core interests, experts said...     more
