US Navy says Black Sea international waters are 'open for all' amid Russian forces threatening HMS Defender
US Navy commanders set to take part in an operation with the Royal Navy in the Black Sea have said the waters are ‘open to the world’ in the wake of Russian aggression.
Jun. 30 - Royal Navy and US Navy forces will be part of 32 nations sending more than 30 ships and 40 aircraft to take part in Sea Breeze 2021 over the next two weeks.
The trials in the Black Sea follow Russian forces threatening a Royal Navy destroyer as it passed through the international waters earlier this month, with Portsmouth-based HMS Defender being warned to change course or be fired upon.
The Type 45 destroyer was buzzed by more than 20 Russian jets as it passed through an internationally-recognised shipping lane close to Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
Russia’s defence ministry claims to have fired warning shots at HMS Defender, while the UK’s Ministry of Defence assert the salvo was a long-declared Russian gunnery test.
Speaking at a press conference after the incident, US naval top brass told The News at a press conference today they expect all nations to respect international maritime law.
Captain Kyle Gantt, the deputy commander of the US Navy’s Task Force 65, said: ‘We are demonstrating to the world that the Black Sea is open to the world and is not owned by any one nation.
‘What we expect is that all nations will operate professionally at sea and respect international laws’... more

Russian fighter jets harassed a Dutch frigate in the Black Sea for hours and carried out mock attacks, defense ministry says
Jun 30 - Russian fighters harassed the Dutch frigate HNLMS Eversten in the Black Sea for hours last week, the Dutch defense ministry said Tuesday.
During the incident, which lasted roughly five hours last Thursday, Russian fighters armed with air-to-surface missiles flew low and close the warship, conducting mock attacks on the Royal Netherlands Navy vessel.

The Dutch warship also experienced jamming that disrupted some of its onboard electronic systems, the defense ministry said.
The ship's commanding officer said in a statement that the Eversten was sailing in international waters, arguing that there was no reason for the observed Russian actions, which he called "irresponsible and unsafe"... more

A bundle of classified Ministry of Defence (MoD) documents containing details about the Royal Navy's Type 45 destroyer HMS Defender's provocative Black Sea passage was recently discovered at a bus stop in Kent, a county in southeastern England. What's behind the mysterious dump?
Jun. 30 - The BBC, who broke the story on Monday, specified that 50 pages of secret MoD papers were discovered in a "soggy heap" behind a bus stop in Kent on the morning of 22 June, a day before a British warship sailed through Russia's territorial waters near Cape Fiolent, Crimea, which is close to a Russian Black Sea Naval Base in Sevastopol.
Having issued repeated warnings to HMS Defender over violating Russia's territorial waters, Russian attack aircraft and coast guard ships fired warning shots forcing the British Royal Navy destroyer to leave the area, according to video evidence from Russia's FSB. In the aftermath of the incident, the UK rejected Russia's account of events, insisting that HMS Defender was making a legal and innocent passage. However, the documents dated 21 June indicate that the British military was well aware of Russia's possible reaction and deliberately resorted to the provocative mission, dubbed "Op Ditroite", in a bid to send a message to Moscow. The strange events surrounding the discovery of the damning files have triggered questions as to whether it was an accident or a leak.

Biden-Putin Summit Sparks Political Confrontations Inside Ukraine
Jun. 30 - ...Since his election in 2019, President Zelenskyy’s inability to organize a clear international coalition that would tangibly back Kyiv’s efforts to resolve the Donbas situation on Ukrainian terms puts the president in an arduous position politically—particularly against the backdrop of Russia’s military buildup on Ukraine’s border. This diplomatic fiasco has come under criticism from Zelenskyy’s domestic opposition in both the pro-Russian and pro-Western camps. When it comes to the latter, former president Petro Poroshenko, who heads the European Solidarity party, stated that the latest postponement of Ukraine’s Membership Action Plan (MAP), at the June 14 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Brussels, was a direct consequence of the failure of the reforms adopted by Zelenskyy’s team, especially in the fight against corruption and in improving the judiciary (5.ua, June 17). Whereas, on the other side, leaders of the Opposition Platform–For Life party insist on accepting Moscow’s interpretation of Minsk Two, and they continue to repeat the Kremlin’s narratives that accuse Zelenskyy of surrendering the country to external control from the West (Regnum, June, 17). At some point, these two rival pro-European and pro-Russian camps may seek to cooperate in a bid to further damage Zelenskyy’s ratings.
In the last (snap) parliamentary elections, held in July 2019, Zelenskyy’s Servant of the People party received 43.16 percent of the ballots cast. But in just two years, its popular rating has dropped by half, to 22 percent... quoted from
