Statement by President Joe Biden on the For the People Act

JUNE 22, 2021•STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
Today, Democrats in Congress unanimously came together to protect the sacred right to vote.

In supporting the For the People Act and defending the rights of voters, they stood united for democracy. They stood against the ongoing assault of voter suppression that represents a Jim Crow era in the 21st Century.

Unfortunately, a Democratic stand to protect our democracy met a solid Republican wall of opposition. Senate Republicans opposed even a debate—even considering—legislation to protect the right to vote and our democracy.

It was the suppression of a bill to end voter suppression—another attack on voting rights that is sadly not unprecedented.

The creed “We Shall Overcome” is a longtime mainstay of the Civil Rights Movement. By coming together, Democrats took the next step forward in this continuous struggle—not just on Capitol Hill, but across the country—and a step forward to honor all those who came before us, people of all races and ages, who sacrificed and died to protect this sacred right.

I’ll have more to say on this next week. But let me be clear. This fight is far from over—far from over. I’ve been engaged in this work my whole career, and we are going to be ramping up our efforts to overcome again—for the people, for our very democracy.     source from

US Senate Republicans block Democrats' voting rights bill

The GOP has once again used its minority rights in the Senate to block key Democrat legislation. Democrats have pledged to keep trying to pass voting rights reforms.

Jun. 23 - US President Joe Biden and Democrat lawmakers faced an unsurprising setback on Tuesday after Republican Senators blocked sweeping voting rights legislation.
Members of the evenly divided Senate chamber voted along party lines with the GOP employing the filibuster to prevent a debate on the proposed bill.

Democrats have held up the For the People Act as a key legislative goal that aims to remove hurdles for voters and limit the influence of money in politics. But they face the challenge of finding a compromise with the stubbornly opposed Republican party.

Biden pleaded for the bill to be passed and sent to his desk, saying in a tweet that "democracy is in peril" and "we urgently need the For the People Act"...     more
The For the People Act[1] (also known as H.R. 1) is a bill in the United States Congress that purports[2] to expand voting rights, change campaign finance laws to reduce the influence of money in politics, limit partisan gerrymandering, and create new ethics rules for federal officeholders.[3][4][5][6]

The act was originally introduced by John Sarbanes in 2019, on behalf of the newly elected Democratic majority in the United States House of Representatives as the first official legislation of the 116th United States Congress.[5][7] The House passed the bill on March 8, by a party-line vote of 234–193.[8][9] The bill was viewed as a "signature piece of legislation" from the Democratic House majority.[10] After the House passed the bill, however, it was blocked from receiving a vote by the then Republican-controlled Senate, under Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.[11][12]

In 2021, in the 117th Congress, congressional Democrats reintroduced the act as H.R. 1 and S. 1.[13] On March 3, 2021, the bill passed the House of Representatives on a near party-line vote of 220–210, advancing to the Senate, which is split 50–50 between Democrats and Republicans, with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris holding the tie-breaking vote.[14] The bill had unified support in the Democratic caucus, however Senate Republicans blocked the bill with a filibuster on June 22, 2021, killing the bill before it could be debated with a party-line vote of 50-50. Some Senate Democrats have expressed support for abolishing the filibuster as a result, but others in their caucus oppose or have expressed reservations about doing so.     from Wikipeda

Statement by Vice President Kamala Harris on the For the People Act

JUNE 22, 2021•STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
When we cast a ballot, we not only decide our leaders. We determine our future.

The right to vote is fundamental. It gives Americans a voice in what happens in our nation—whether that is in our economy or our national security, our education system or our healthcare system. When more people have a voice, our democracy becomes more representative, and our nation becomes stronger.

Today, across our nation, we are witnessing unprecedented attacks on voting rights. There are unjust bills in dozens of state legislatures that would limit early voting and vote by mail and otherwise make it harder for the American people to vote. Make no mistake: While these attacks are meant to silence some Americans, the impact is felt by all Americans.

At this critical moment, the United States Senate had a critical opportunity to make voting more accessible nationwide. The For The People Act has the broad support of the American people. Yet, as Senate Democrats united around the legislation, this afternoon, Senate Republicans voted against advancing it...     more
