US Navy says Black Sea international waters are 'open for all' amid Russian forces threatening HMS Defender
US Navy commanders set to take part in an operation with the Royal Navy in the Black Sea have said the waters are ‘open to the world’ in the wake of Russian aggression.
Jun. 30 - Royal Navy and US Navy forces will be part of 32 nations sending more than 30 ships and 40 aircraft to take part in Sea Breeze 2021 over the next two weeks.
The trials in the Black Sea follow Russian forces threatening a Royal Navy destroyer as it passed through the international waters earlier this month, with Portsmouth-based HMS Defender being warned to change course or be fired upon.
The Type 45 destroyer was buzzed by more than 20 Russian jets as it passed through an internationally-recognised shipping lane close to Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
Russia’s defence ministry claims to have fired warning shots at HMS Defender, while the UK’s Ministry of Defence assert the salvo was a long-declared Russian gunnery test.
Speaking at a press conference after the incident, US naval top brass told The News at a press conference today they expect all nations to respect international maritime law.

Assignments ashore include Flag Lieutenant for Commander, Naval Surface Forces, Atlantic, Branch Chief for Maritime Operations in the Joint Irregular Warfare Center, Aide de Camp for Commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command, and Branch Head for Destroyers and Future Ship Requirements on the OPNAV staff (N96).
Captain Gantt earned a B.S. in History from the U.S. Naval Academy, and an M.B.A. with concentration in Financial Management from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). While at NPS, he was selected as a Conrad Scholar for excellence in Financial Management. He is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College.

During the incident, which lasted roughly five hours last Thursday, Russian fighters armed with air-to-surface missiles flew low and close the warship, conducting mock attacks on the Royal Netherlands Navy vessel.

Having issued repeated warnings to HMS Defender over violating Russia's territorial waters, Russian attack aircraft and coast guard ships fired warning shots forcing the British Royal Navy destroyer to leave the area, according to video evidence from Russia's FSB. In the aftermath of the incident, the UK rejected Russia's account of events, insisting that HMS Defender was making a legal and innocent passage. However, the documents dated 21 June indicate that the British military was well aware of Russia's possible reaction and deliberately resorted to the provocative mission, dubbed "Op Ditroite", in a bid to send a message to Moscow. The strange events surrounding the discovery of the damning files have triggered questions as to whether it was an accident or a leak.
