Biden White House Is ‘Monitoring’ Fuel Shortages From Colonial Pipeline Cyber Attack

May 11 - President Joe Biden’s administration is “monitoring” fuel shortages in the Southeast U.S. that are coming as a result of the cyber attack against Colonial Pipeline, White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced late Monday.

The U.S. has accused the hacking organization “DarkSide” of carrying out the ransomware attack against Colonial Pipeline, a private company. The company was forced to shut down 5,500 miles of pipeline that supply roughly 45% of the oil used on the East Coast. Neither the Biden administration nor the company has announced whether a ransom has been paid, but the pipeline remained shut down as of Monday.

“The Administration is continually assessing the impact of this ongoing incident on fuel supply for the East Coast. We are monitoring supply shortages in parts of the Southeast and are evaluating every action the Administration can take to mitigate the impact as much as possible,” Psaki said in a statement Monday night.

“The President continues to be regularly briefed on the Colonial Pipeline incident,” she added.

A company that operates a major U.S. energy pipeline says it was forced to temporarily halt all pipeline operations following a cybersecurity attack. Colonial Pipeline says the attack affected some of its information technology systems. https://t.co/vwzSRLGaKW

The U.S. government said earlier Monday that it does not at this point believe a foreign nation was behind the attack, saying evidence points to DarkSide acting on its own accord. Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency on Monday in an effort to ensure a normal oil supply.

“The President has directed agencies across the Federal Government to bring their resources to bear to help alleviate shortages where they may occur,” Psaki said in a statement.     source from

May 11 - In a speech marking the start of his final year in office, President Moon Jae-in issued a strongly worded statement, apparently condemning an activist group for sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the inter-Korean border.

“It is never desirable to dampen inter-Korean relations by violating inter-Korean agreements and current laws. I stress that the government has no choice but to strictly enforce the laws,” Moon said Monday in a televised speech.

While the president did not specifically say which activities violated the agreements or the laws, it was apparent that Moon was targeting Park Sang-hak, a well-known North Korean defector who claimed to have dispatched propaganda leaflets into the North in defiance of a new law that criminalizes such actions.

Since last year, the Moon administration has carried out a broad campaign to stop leafletting and also enacted the anti-leaflet law, but the president has barely mentioned the topic in public. The rare mention of it in his 20-minute speech can be seen as an effort to stably manage the Korean Peninsula situation to prevent Pyongyang from engaging in provocation ahead of the crucial summit between the US and Korea, where the future policy direction toward the recalcitrant regime hangs in the balance, experts say.      more

Chinese Media Warns US Would Face ‘Absolute Nightmare’ in Conflict With China, Russia

May 10 - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently characterized Moscow’s relations with Beijing as “the best in their entire history,” with the Chinese Foreign Ministry announcing last month that the two countries enjoy a “comprehensive partnership” and would “support each other in matters of protecting state sovereignty.”

China’s ruling Communist Party-aligned Global Times newspaper has published a pair of editorials warning the US and its allies not to provoke aggression against Moscow and Beijing, and suggesting that the two nations are now significantly stronger than the old Eastern Bloc.

“The combined power of China and Russia is far greater than that of the former Soviet Union-Eastern Europe bloc. The economic, scientific and military strength of China and Russia is not only huge in scale, but also has wider implications for the whole world. If anyone tries to ride roughshod over this fact and pushes China and Russia to join forces in a desperate fight, that must be its nightmare,” the first of the editorials, published 5 May, reads.Warning Washington that its “strategic game with fire” would fail, the newspaper stressed that Moscow and China carry themselves in a “strategically restrained” manner and “are committed to upholding” the United Nations Charter and an “international order based on international law.”

The article goes on to suggest that the reason US elites have sought to isolate China and Russia and exclude them from a new Western-dominated international system is because they “have either recognized or anticipated the aging and declining competitiveness of the American and Western way of governance,” and seek to simply jettison potential competitors.      more

President Biden Delivers Remarks on April Jobs Report
President Biden delivered remarks on the April 2021 jobs report, which found that the U.S. had added 266,000 jobs that month - well below the expected one million mark. The president said the job numbers reflected the need to bold action to help the economy bounce back. He also rebutted speculation that the enhanced unemployment benefit was impacting Americans returning to work.

Remarks by President Biden on the April Jobs Report
MAY 07, 2021

THE PRESIDENT:  Good afternoon.  It’s exactly 12:00.  I want to — I want to put today’s jobs report in perspective.  And — look, when we came to office, we knew we were facing a once-in-a-century pandemic and a once-in-a-generation economic crisis.  And we knew this wouldn’t be a sprint; it would be a marathon.

Quite frankly, we are moving more rapidly than I thought we would.  This morning, we learned that our economy created 266,000 jobs in April.  It hadn’t been adjusted again yet, but that’s what it says: 266.

And listening to commentators today — (laughs) — as I was getting dressed, you might think that we should be disappointed.  But when we passed the American Rescue Plan, I want to remind everybody, it was designed to help us over the course of a year — not 60 days, a year.  We never thought that, after the first 50 or 60 days, everything would be fine.

Today, there’s more evidence that our economy is moving in the right direction, but it’s clear we have a long way to go.  All told, our economy has added more than 1,500,000 new jobs since I took office.  That’s the most number of jobs created in the first three months of any presidency in our history.

And just for perspective, in these three months before I got here, the economy added about 60,000 jobs a month, not half a million.  In the three months since I’ve been here, the economy has added 500,000 jobs per month.

And this is progress.  And it’s a testament to our new strategy of growing this economy from the bottom up and the middle out.   And it’s a clear testament to why it’s so needed.

Some critics said that we didn’t need the Ameriscan — the American Rescue Plan, that this economy would just heal itself.  Today’s report just underscores, in my view, how vital the actions we’re taking are.  Checks to people who are hurting.  Support for small businesses, for childcare, and school reopening.  Support to help families put food on the table.  Our efforts are starting to work, but the climb is steep and we still have a long way to go...     more
Liz Cheney has criticized Trump in public, even publishing a newspaper column urging colleagues to spurn the ‘Trump cult of personality’.
Liz Cheney a martyr to resistance as Republican party picks cult of Trump

The Republican congresswoman is all but certain to lose her leadership role. Her crime? Rejecting the ex-president’s big lie

May 8 - She is a champion of the hawkish foreign policy espoused by her father, a former US vice-president dubbed “Darth Vader”. She is a hardline conservative whose opposition to gay marriage pained her lesbian sister.

Now Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney finds herself a likely martyr of the resistance to ex-president Donald Trump, earning plaudits from party moderates and even some Democrats for swearing allegiance to truth rather than lies.

Cheney appears all but certain next week to lose her status as the sole woman in Republican leadership in the House of Representatives. Members have been lining up to express a lack of confidence in her and instead tout Elise Stefanik, a pro-Trump congresswoman, as her successor.

Cheney’s cardinal sin is to reject Trump’s “big lie” that last year’s election was stolen from him, increasingly the definitive loyalty test within the party. On the contrary, she has spoken out in public, tweeted that the false claim is “poisoning our democratic system” and even published a newspaper column urging colleagues to spurn the “Trump cult of personality”.

The former president has fired back, branding her a “warmonger” and throwing his weight behind Stefanik. Future historians may regard it as a fork in the road for Republicans: a choice between a conspiratorial demagogue and a return to conservatism, institutionalism and fact-based reality. It seems clear that Cheney will lose, much to the despair of admiring “Never Trumpers”.     source from
Republicans bet that Donald Trump is more popular than principles as they turn against Liz Cheney

May 8 - WASHINGTON—From Hollywood to the history books, Americans love a story of someone who is doomed to defeat but goes down swinging, fighting for what they believe in. It’s the story of “Rocky” and “Cool Hand Luke,” of Custer’s Last Stand and the Alamo.

Soon, it will likely be the story of Rep. Liz Cheney. As the Republican House conference chair, she holds the highest rank of any woman in her party. She’s among the most reliably conservative members of the GOP caucus. She’s the daughter of a man who served in four Republican administrations, including eight years as vice-president. Cheney is Republican Party royalty, and she is on her way to being ousted from her leadership position in a vote expected next week.

Her crime is repeating the simple truth in the face of the Big Lie. Former president Donald Trump, continues to insist he actually won the 2020 election. Cheney keeps telling the truth that he did not. It may end her career. And it may also crack up her party.

In a column in the Washington Post this week, Cheney wrote, “The Republican Party is at a turning point, and Republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution.” It looks to most observers as if that Republican choice has already been made, and that the party has chosen instead unquestioning allegiance to Trump...     more

White House Daily Briefing
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki held a briefing on the Biden administration’s policy agenda. Among the topics discussed were the Iran nuclear deal, President Biden’s intention to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, vaccine access, reopening schools, and the April 2021 jobs report. Joining the press secretary was Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who directly addressed the jobs report. Secretary Yellen said they knew recovery would “not be a hundred-day battle,” and that “today’s jobs report underscores the long haul climb back to recovery.”

Tucker Carlson tries to blame Joe Biden for Fox News misleading Americans on vaccines

May 7 - On Thursday, Fox News host Tucker Carlson doubled down on baseless fearmongering about the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines — and went on to blame President Joe Biden for it.

"More deaths have been connected to the new COVID vaccines over the past 4 months than to all previous vaccines combined," said Carlson. In fact, this isn't true — he is just citing the number of events reported to VAERS, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. But VAERS is not actually a database of vaccine injuries; it's only a list of medical events reported as happening after a vaccine was administered, with no verification that the vaccine caused the event or even that the event was real. One doctor even submitted a report to VAERS in 2004 that a flu shot turned him into the Incredible Hulk.

But Carlson didn't stop there. He also acknowledged that not every event in VAERS may be real, but blamed Joe Biden for the database's inaccuracy — even though VAERS has always been set up this way and was never intended to be an accurate list of actual vaccine injuries.

"Why hasn't the Biden administration fixed its reporting system?" demanded Carlson. "You'd think that would be important."     quoted from

Secretary of State Blinken and Ukrainian President Zelensky Hold News of State Antony Blinken held a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. This audio for this program has technical issues.

Antony Blinken: US tells Russia to cease 'reckless and aggressive actions'

May 7 - Antony Blinken made the comments during a trip to Kyiv on Thursday where he met top Ukrainian officials.

Speaking alongside President Volodymyr Zelensky, he said the US was looking to strengthen security co-operation and assistance between the two countries.

The visit comes just weeks after Russia deployed thousands of soldiers close to the Ukrainian border.

"We are aware that Russia has withdrawn some forces from the border... but we also see that significant forces remain there [and] significant equipment remains there," Mr Blinken said.

The top US diplomat said Washington was "monitoring the situation very, very closely".

He did not provide further details of any additional security support the US was considering.

Barbara Plett Usher, the BBC's State Department correspondent, says the visit was intended to signal that Ukraine is a high foreign policy priority for President Joe Biden's administration.

'Irresponsible and destabilising'

Mr Blinken travelled to Ukraine following a meeting of foreign ministers of the G7 group of industrialised nations in London earlier this week.

A statement issued after the two-day talks criticised Moscow for its "irresponsible and destabilising behaviour", particularly against Ukraine, and for cyber-attacks...     more

India Welcomes US Decision to Waive Off Patent Rules on COVID-19 Vaccines

The Indian embassy in the US reached out to various American lawmakers to gather support for the proposal made by India and South Africa.

May 6 - Washington: India has appreciated the Biden administration’s decision to support a proposal moved by it and South Africa to temporarily waive some Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) rules amid the coronavirus pandemic.

For the past several weeks, India’s ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, along with the diplomats from South Africa, had been meeting US lawmakers and officials regarding the proposal.

“We appreciate the US administration’s announcement today of its support for waiver of IPR for COVID-19 vaccines,” Sandhu told PTI on Wednesday.

Making the announcement, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said this is a global health crisis and the extraordinary circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic call for extraordinary measures.

“The (Biden) administration believes strongly in intellectual property protections, but in service of ending this pandemic, supports the waiver of those protections for COVID-19 vaccines,” Tai said in a major policy announcement.     source from

But ever since, Republicans from New York and Indiana to Texas and Washington state have promoted elements of legislation that would not  exist if they had their way.
Republicans promote pandemic relief they voted against

May 6 -
NEW YORK (AP) — Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., said it pained her to vote against the $1.9 trillion “American Rescue Plan.”

But in the weeks that followed, the first-term Republican issued a news release celebrating more than $3.7 million from the package that went to community health centers in her district as one of her “achievements.” She said she prided herself on “bringing federal funding to the district and back into the pockets of taxpayers.”
Malliotakis is far from alone.

Every Republican in Congress voted against the sweeping pandemic relief bill that President Joe Biden signed into law three months ago. But since the early spring votes, Republicans from New York and Indiana to Texas and Washington state have promoted elements of the legislation they fought to defeat.

The Republicans' favorite provisions represent a tiny sliver of the massive law, which sent $1,400 checks to millions of Americans, extended unemployment benefits until September, increased the child tax credit, offered housing assistance for millions of low-income Americans and expanded health care coverage. Republicans tried to negotiate a smaller package, arguing that Biden's plan was too expensive and not focused enough on the nation’s health and economic crises.

Democrats are promising to make the pandemic relief vote — and the Republican resistance to it — a central element in their political strategy moving into next year's midterm elections as they defend delicate House and Senate majorities. And there are early signs that Republicans may struggle to defend their opposition to the popular legislative package, which was designed to protect the nation's fragile economic recovery following the worst public health threat in a century...     more

Biden repeals Trump-era rule on gig workers

May 6, NEW YORK (AP) — The Biden administration nullified a Trump-era rule Wednesday that would have made it easier to classify workers as independent contractors, blocking a change supported by delivery and ride-hailing services.

The Labor Department's decision came just two days before the Trump-era rule was supposed to take effect. The move means the Labor Department will continue to use existing rules under the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act to determine whether a worker should be classified as an independent contractor.     source from

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba (R) and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Blinken in Ukraine Reaffirms U.S. Commitment to Kiev Against Russia

May 6 - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken kicked off his visit to Ukraine on Thursday by reaffirming Washington's commitment to supporting Kiev's sovereignty and territorial integrity following a massive troop buildup by Russia.

In the first visit to Kiev by a senior U.S. official under President Joe Biden, Blinken opened the day by meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and underscoring the need for greater reforms, even as he showed support against Moscow.

"I'm here really for a very simple reason, which is to, on behalf of President Biden, reaffirm — strongly — our commitment to the partnership between our countries, our commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence," Blinken told Kuleba.

He added that Washington will "work with you and continue to strengthen your own democracy, building institutions, advancing your reforms against corruption."

Kuleba told Blinken that Kiev "deeply appreciates" the U.S. aid Ukraine has received to support its battle in the east against pro-Russian separatists, who are widely seen as having the Kremlin's military and political backing.

The one-day visit comes after Russia last month amassed 100,000 troops on Ukraine's borders, the biggest mobilization since Moscow seized the majority-Russian peninsula of Crimea in 2014 and war broke out in eastern Ukraine.

Clashes in the east between the government and separatists have been intensifying since January, a bloody new phase in Europe's only ongoing military conflict which has claimed more than 13,000 lives.

Russia quickly announced a pullback after the latest buildup, leading some experts to believe President Vladimir Putin was testing the will of Biden while seeking to intensify pressure on Ukraine.

Blinken arrived late Thursday from London where he joined other foreign ministers from the Group of Seven wealthy democracies in condemning Russia's "irresponsible and destabilizing behavior" in Ukraine and elsewhere...     more
