An absentee ballot is a vote cast by someone who is unable or unwilling to attend the official polling station to which the voter is normally allocated. Methods include voting at a different location, postal votingproxy voting and online voting. Increasing the ease of access to absentee ballots is seen by many as one way to improve voter turnout through convenience voting, though some countries require that a valid reason, such as infirmity or travel, be given before a voter can participate in an absentee ballot. Early voting overlaps with absentee voting. Early voting includes votes cast before the official election day(s), by mail, online or in-person at voting centers which are open for the purpose. Some places call early in-person voting a form of "absentee" voting, since voters are absent from the polling place on election day.[1]

As of Friday, 388,535 of nearly 2 million requested absentee ballots remained outstanding, Secretary of State Steve Simon said.
US Election 2020: Minnesota Democrats ramp up push for absentee ballot turnout
Thursday’s ruling by a three-judge panel of the 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals said absentees arriving after Election Day should be separated from other ballots, raising the specter that they could later be found to be invalid.

Oct. 31 - Minnesota Democrats and election officials on Friday urged people with absentee ballots not yet mailed to drop them off by hand or vote in person, a day after an appellate court’s ruling raised questions about whether ballots that arrive up to seven days beyond Election Day would be counted. [The answer is "NO".]

Donald Trump deserves a second term

Oct. 31, (CNN)The case for President Donald Trump is simple: He made the economy work for so many Americans, kept us out of new and costly wars and even brokered peace deals in the Middle East.

He believes our taxes should be lower, not higher -- and signed into law sweeping tax relief for businesses and the vast majority of federal income tax filers. He thinks government shouldn't overregulate, rolling back numerous Obama-era overreaches, while working with his Republican allies in Congress.

And despite his relative dovishness, he has invested in our military and in the men and women who wear the uniform. As a result, our enemies know we are more than capable of finishing them. Just ask the former leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi or former Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.     continue to read

US election 2020: When is it, how does it work, and when will we know the results?

Oct. 30 - On Tuesday, November 3, the United States will vote to decide its next president after one of the most chaotic campaigns in history amid social and political unrest across the country.

As the US grapples with the economic and health crisis of the coronavirus pandemic and the looming threat of climate change, voters are choosing between two candidates to steer one of the world's major powers through an increasingly uncertain future.

President Donald Trump, voted in four years ago as the 45th US president, is the candidate for the Republican Party, also known as the Grand Old Party (GOP).

Former Vice President Joe Biden, who served as the 47th US vice president alongside President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017, is the nominee for the Democratic Party.     more details
On 3 November, Americans will head to the polls and send either Joe Biden or Donald Trump to the White House.
US election 2020: What to look out for on election night

Here's what to watch for as an unpredictable election night unfolds, and the results roll in.
Some key details:
  • To become US president, you don't actually need to win the popular vote. Instead, candidates are aiming to win the majority in something called the electoral college (more on that below)
  • Millions more Americans are voting by mail than in previous elections. Counting postal votes can take more time, and some states won't start until polling day, so there will almost certainly be delays for some results.
  • And because of this unprecedented surge of postal votes, a candidate who takes an early lead may end up being overtaken as postal or in-person votes are tallied. So be wary of the numbers.
Some key terms:
  • Bellwether state: Places like Ohio and Missouri where voters have proven reliable at choosing the national winner
  • Exit poll: In-person interviews with voters as they leave their polling locations. Only a small number of voters are interviewed, so the exit poll result can turn out to be different to the official count.
  • Electoral college: Each state gets a number of electors, roughly in proportion to its population. In most cases, whichever candidate wins a state also wins all that state's electors, who meet later to choose the president and vice president. Because there are 538 electoral college votes, each candidate needs 270 to win. There's a full explanation of the system here.
  • Projections v calling: On election night, ballot counts will be used to predict - or project - the likely winner of each state and the nationwide vote. A state will not be "called", however, until enough data has been collected to declare a clear winner. That includes months of polling, exit polls on the day and some of the actual votes counted (more below on that).
  • Swing state or battleground state: These states lack a clear party affiliation, meaning they are up for grabs for both Democratic and Republican candidates.
  • Red state v blue state: These states tend to vote with a particular party - Republicans in red states and Democrats in blue.
  • more others

President Donald Trump: The 60 Minutes 2020 Election Interview
Oct 26, 2020
The White House declared Donald Trump has 'ended the Covid-19 pandemic' - leaving officials fuming.

White House declared Trump 'ended Covid-19 pandemic' and the taskforce are not happy
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy listed it as one of Donald Trump's accomplishments - and it was news to the actual coronavirus taskforce

Oct. 29 - The bizarre declaration was made by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy yesterday.
They listed 'ending the Covid-19 pandemic' as one of President Trump's major accomplishments since taking office in 2016 in a new report.

It read: "From the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Administration has taken decisive actions to engage scientists and health professionals in academic, industry, and government to understand, treat and defeat the disease."

But officials on the White House coronavirus taskforce are reportedly upset at the claim - with one telling the Daily Beast it was "mind-boggling".

There’s no world in which anyone can think that [statement] is true," they added.

"Maybe the President. But I don’t see how even he can believe that.

"We have more than 70,000 new cases each day."

At his recent rallies, the President has described the Covid-19 crisis as a "media conspiracy" - claiming TV news exaggerates the risks of the virus in order to deter people from voting.

The pandemic that has upended life across the United States this year, killing more than 227,000 people, is roaring back in the days leading up to Tuesday's contest between Republican Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden.     continue to read

White House COVID-19 task force officials reportedly took personal offense to a Trump admin report that lists 'ending the COVID-19 pandemic' as one of Trump's major first term accomplishments

Oct. 28 - White House COVID-19 task force officials were offended by a report from the Trump administration that lists "ending the COVID-19 pandemic" as one of President Donald Trump's first term accomplishments, The Daily Beast reported Tuesday.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy sent a press release to reporters outlining Trump's major first term accomplishments. The release highlighted points from a full report, including "ending the COVID-19 pandemic" and "understanding our planet" as some of the president's accomplishments in science and technology.

"From the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Administration has taken decisive actions to engage scientists and health professionals in academia, industry, and government to understand, treat, and defeat the disease," the press release read.

Members of the White House coronavirus task force told The Daily Beast that the report seemed to imply blatant disregard for their work in the ongoing pandemic, as hundreds of thousands of Americans continue to get infected and die from the virus.     continue to read

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh referred to the 2000 decision in explaining how he voted in a Wisconsin ballot case.
Kavanaugh’s Bush v. Gore citation draws scrutiny ahead of another divisive election

Oct. 28 - The Supreme Court’s decision in the latest battle over how to count the vote in the battleground state of Wisconsin was not particularly surprising.
The return of Bush v. Gore was.

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh cited the case and another from the 2000 recount of the presidential vote in his explanation of why he voted to deny a request to reinstate an extension for the receipt of mail-in ballots in Wisconsin.

It was triggering for Democrats and voting rights activists.

“It’s not every day we see a member of the Supreme Court citing Bush v. Gore,” said Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Indeed, the Supreme Court has never cited it as precedent in the two decades since, and only one other justice, Clarence Thomas, has even mentioned it in an opinion.    continue to read

One America News threatens to sue Sacha Baron Cohen after they were duped into inviting 'Borat's daughter' as a guest to the White House

Oct. 27 - The conservative One America News Network (OANN) is threatening to sue Sacha Baron Cohen after an actress posing as his daughter in the new Borat film 'duped' their White House correspondent into showing her around the presidential compound.

Maria Bakalova, 24, on September 16 made it inside the White House with Chanel Rion, and was allowed steps from the Oval Office.

She also toured the press areas and grounds north of the White House.
On Monday OANN said that they were considering legal action against Baron Cohen for the stunt - which never made it in to the film, but was tweeted by the Borat star.

'In the spirit of assisting a young female journalist reaching out for help, Ms Rion engaged with Ms Bakalova,' OANN said in a statement, explaining that Bakalova falsely claimed she was producing and hosting a documentary on the negative impacts of socialism.

'They lied to OANN about their intentions.

'The practices deployed were malicious, deceptive, and defamatory. Their production staff approached OANN under false pretenses.'     continue to read

Amy Coney Barrett confirmed as US Supreme Court justice in partisan vote

Monday’s deeply controversial 52-48 vote to approve Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s replacement was the closest high court confirmation ever to a presidential election

Oct. 26 - WASHINGTON (AP) — Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed to the US Supreme Court late Monday by a deeply divided Senate, Republicans overpowering Democrats to install President Donald Trump’s nominee days before the election and secure a likely conservative court majority for years to come.

Trump’s choice to fill the vacancy of the late liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg potentially opens a new era of rulings on abortion, the Affordable Care Act and even his own election. Democrats were unable to stop the outcome, Trump’s third justice on the court, as Republicans raced to reshape the judiciary.

Barrett is 48, and her lifetime appointment as the 115th justice will solidify the court’s rightward tilt.     more details

We’re on the road to socialism

Oct. 7 - ...Support for capitalism and socialism is now almost evenly balanced in the US, which has so far been the only country in the world to be avowedly capitalist on both sides of the political divide. The way the Democratic party is going, it is more likely than not to venture far deeper into social democracy-cum-socialism over the next 50 years. If the US, capitalism’s guarantor, goes socialist, that’s the end.

Donald Trump may win re-election and delay things for a bit. Joe Biden may say that he’s centre-Left but the US is headed unstoppably Leftwards in future if a growing majority support the Democrats’ plans for unaffordable social programmes in education and welfare and a complete reorganisation of the economy, supposedly to handle climate change but actually to make it more socialist...     source
