Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh referred to the 2000 decision in explaining how he voted in a Wisconsin ballot case.
Kavanaugh’s Bush v. Gore citation draws scrutiny ahead of another divisive election

Oct. 28 - The Supreme Court’s decision in the latest battle over how to count the vote in the battleground state of Wisconsin was not particularly surprising.
The return of Bush v. Gore was.

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh cited the case and another from the 2000 recount of the presidential vote in his explanation of why he voted to deny a request to reinstate an extension for the receipt of mail-in ballots in Wisconsin.

It was triggering for Democrats and voting rights activists.

“It’s not every day we see a member of the Supreme Court citing Bush v. Gore,” said Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Indeed, the Supreme Court has never cited it as precedent in the two decades since, and only one other justice, Clarence Thomas, has even mentioned it in an opinion.    continue to read

One America News threatens to sue Sacha Baron Cohen after they were duped into inviting 'Borat's daughter' as a guest to the White House

Oct. 27 - The conservative One America News Network (OANN) is threatening to sue Sacha Baron Cohen after an actress posing as his daughter in the new Borat film 'duped' their White House correspondent into showing her around the presidential compound.

Maria Bakalova, 24, on September 16 made it inside the White House with Chanel Rion, and was allowed steps from the Oval Office.

She also toured the press areas and grounds north of the White House.
On Monday OANN said that they were considering legal action against Baron Cohen for the stunt - which never made it in to the film, but was tweeted by the Borat star.

'In the spirit of assisting a young female journalist reaching out for help, Ms Rion engaged with Ms Bakalova,' OANN said in a statement, explaining that Bakalova falsely claimed she was producing and hosting a documentary on the negative impacts of socialism.

'They lied to OANN about their intentions.

'The practices deployed were malicious, deceptive, and defamatory. Their production staff approached OANN under false pretenses.'     continue to read

Amy Coney Barrett confirmed as US Supreme Court justice in partisan vote

Monday’s deeply controversial 52-48 vote to approve Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s replacement was the closest high court confirmation ever to a presidential election

Oct. 26 - WASHINGTON (AP) — Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed to the US Supreme Court late Monday by a deeply divided Senate, Republicans overpowering Democrats to install President Donald Trump’s nominee days before the election and secure a likely conservative court majority for years to come.

Trump’s choice to fill the vacancy of the late liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg potentially opens a new era of rulings on abortion, the Affordable Care Act and even his own election. Democrats were unable to stop the outcome, Trump’s third justice on the court, as Republicans raced to reshape the judiciary.

Barrett is 48, and her lifetime appointment as the 115th justice will solidify the court’s rightward tilt.     more details

We’re on the road to socialism

Oct. 7 - ...Support for capitalism and socialism is now almost evenly balanced in the US, which has so far been the only country in the world to be avowedly capitalist on both sides of the political divide. The way the Democratic party is going, it is more likely than not to venture far deeper into social democracy-cum-socialism over the next 50 years. If the US, capitalism’s guarantor, goes socialist, that’s the end.

Donald Trump may win re-election and delay things for a bit. Joe Biden may say that he’s centre-Left but the US is headed unstoppably Leftwards in future if a growing majority support the Democrats’ plans for unaffordable social programmes in education and welfare and a complete reorganisation of the economy, supposedly to handle climate change but actually to make it more socialist...     source

President Trump and former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. appeared on “60 Minutes.”
With a little more than a week until Election Day, Trump and Biden make closing pitches on ‘60 Minutes.’

Oct. 26 - Nine days before Election Day, President Trump and Joseph R. Biden Jr. offered sharply divergent visions for the country — including the coronavirus pandemic, the economy and foreign policy — in wide-ranging interviews on “60 Minutes.”

In both substance and demeanor, the two presidential candidates cut strikingly different figures during one of their last big opportunities to reach a national television audience during the campaign.

Mr. Trump was combative and testy during his interview with the “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl, insisting, as he has done repeatedly in recent days despite surging coronavirus cases, that the country was “rounding the corner” on the pandemic.

“We’ve done a very, very good job,” he said at one point, falsely arguing that the increase in cases was because “we’re doing so much testing.”

Speaking at a time when family, business and government finances have been battered by the pandemic, the president also painted a rosy picture of the nation’s economy, which he said was “already roaring back.” Pressed to specify his biggest domestic priority, Mr. Trump responded that it was to “get back to normal” and “have the economy rage and be great with jobs and everybody be happy.”

But perhaps the biggest headline to emerge from his interview was his behavior. As he became increasingly irritated with the questioning, he cut off his interview with Ms. Stahl, then taunted her on Twitter and posted a 38-minute clip of the interview on Facebook.

“Look at the bias, hatred and rudeness on behalf of 60 Minutes and CBS,” Mr. Trump tweeted on Thursday with a link to the clip.
Mr. Biden, for his part, was more measured in his interview with CBS News’s Norah O’Donnell.
But Mr. Biden was direct in his criticism of Mr. Trump. Asked what the biggest domestic issue facing the country was, he responded “Covid.”

“The way he’s handling Covid is just absolutely totally irresponsible,” he said about Mr. Trump.
As he has done before, he also rejected the suggestion from Mr. Trump and Republicans that he was a “Trojan horse” for the Democratic Party’s left wing.      source

‘Borat’ Star Sacha Baron Cohen Thanks Donald Trump Following President’s ‘Creep’ Remarks

Oct. 25 - Sacha Baron Cohen was recently the target of pointed remarks made by President Donald Trump regarding his infamous character Borat Sagdiyev, but the 49-year-old is apparently taking the comments in stride. On Saturday, Cohen posted on Twitter to offer his gratitude to the president for referring to him as a “creep” while discussing the former’s latest movie, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, with reporters while aboard Air Force One.

In his tweet, the comedian thanked Trump for the “free publicity” he received as a result of the commander-in-chief mentioning him and his film — which was released via Amazon Prime on Friday — even as he had portrayed the actor in a negative light. Cohen further insinuated that the leader of the executive branch of America’s government is a racist and that the whole world is laughing at him.     more details

Comparing Biden and Trump on defense issues as election nears

Oct. 19 - ...Biden is focusing his platform on service members and their families, rather than touting weapons systems.

His platform includes paying service members a competitive wage, providing military families with resources and prioritizing support for military children.

That translates to researching and developing solutions to increase the time between permanent changes of station (PCS) while ensuring the military’s demands are met.

“One such solution could be investing in the creation of virtual or hybrid learning scenarios for mandatory professional military education so that service members and their families can remain in place, rather than PCS to a new base for a short educational tour,” Biden’s website states.

His platform continues the Defense Department’s work to reduce military spouse unemployment. State governors and military groups have been working on the issue for the past few years...

...Trump is also touting the creation of the Space Force as a way to protect U.S. assets in space and the elevation of U.S. Cyber Command to a full combatant commander. Both of those achievements originated from bipartisan bills in Congress from before the Trump presidency.

The administration is also playing up its work with North Korea, Iran and Russia.

The Trump Administration has applied numerous sanctions against Russia for its malicious cyber activities, its destabilizing activities in Ukraine and its chemical weapons use,” the president’s website states...    source
