The Chicago Tribune reported that 150 of the agents are heading to Chicago, under a plan being drawn up by officials at the Homeland Security Department. They are reportedly Homeland Security Investigations agents.
 
Local officials have complained that federal agents on the scene in tense situations are not as well trained in deescalating situations and dealing with protesters as are local police who interact with the community daily...      more

‘No reason’ for President Trump to send federal troops to Detroit, Gov. Whitmer says

July 21 - Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel on Monday released statements after President Donald Trump said he was considering sending federal law enforcement to cities including Detroit to address recent protests.


The death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis has sparked protests against police brutality and racial injustice in Michigan and nationally.

Russia Is Trying to Beat the West to a Covid-19 Vaccine

July 18 - (Bloomberg) -- A top Russian official said his country could roll out a vaccine against Covid-19 as soon as September, while denying accusations that hackers working for the country’s intelligence agency tried to steal sensitive data from rival researchers in the U.K., U.S. and Canada.
“Russia may be one of the first to produce a vaccine against the backdrop of the billions that are being invested in the U.S. and all the pharma companies working on it,” said Kirill Dmitriev, the chief executive of the government-backed Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which is financing one of the the country’s efforts to devise a vaccine. “It's a little bit of a shocking story.”

Trump’s covid-19 denial blows up in his face
July - President Trump’s only real strategy for addressing the coronavirus pandemic has been denial. It will go away. States must reopen. Try hydroxychloroquine. Move the Republican National Convention to avoid guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Forget masks. Test less.
Without exception, each of these instances of magical thinking not only failed him but made things much worse, both politically and medically.

July 15 - The United States’ actions in response to Beijing’s expanding control over Hong Kong will “inflict pain” on Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials, while dampening the city’s attractiveness as a financial hub, analysts said.

President Donald Trump on July 14 signed into law a bill that stipulates sanctions on officials and banks involved in eroding the city’s autonomy. He also signed an executive order ending Hong Kong’s preferential treatment by the United States.
