Alexander Lukashenko| May 29, 2021

2 - White House News in Chinese (weebly.com)

Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko or Alyaksand(а)r Ryhoravich Lukashenka[a] in Belarusian (born 31 August 1954) is a Belarusian politician who has served as the first and current president of Belarus since the establishment of the office on 20 July 1994.[3] Prior to his political career, Lukashenko worked as director of a state farm (sovkhoz), and served in the Soviet Border Troops and in the Soviet Army.

Lukashenko continued state ownership of key industries in Belarus after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and retained important Soviet-era symbolism, which can be seen in the coat of arms and national flag of Belarus, adopted following a controversial 1995 referendum, which were based on the symbols of the Byelorussian SSR. Following the same referendum, Lukashenko was given more power with the ability to dismiss the Supreme Soviet of Belarus and another referendum in 1996 allowed Lukashenko to further consolidate power. The Russian language was also given the same status as Belarusian, and economic ties with Russia were strengthened, which furthermore led to the creation of the Union State with Russia, which allows Belarusians to freely travel to, work, and study in Russia, and vice versa. However, relations with Russia have not always run smoothly under his tenure, such as during the Milk Wars.[4]

Lukashenko heads an authoritarian government and has often been referred to by media outlets as "Europe's last dictator".[5] Elections are not considered to be free and fair by international monitors, opponents of the regime are repressed, and the media is not free,[6][7] leading to sanctions on Lukashenko and other Belarusian officials being imposed.[8][9][10] His disputed victory in the country's 2020 presidential election led to widespread allegations of vote rigging, which strongly amplified anti-government protests, the largest during his rule.[11] Protesters have faced violent persecution by the authorities. A statement by the United Nations Human Rights Office on 1 September cited more than 450 documented cases of torture and ill-treatment of detainees, as well as reports of sexual abuse and rape.[12] Following the contested election, Lukashenko is not recognized by the United Kingdom, European Union and the United States as the legitimate president of Belarus.     from Wikipedia

Belarus: US draws up sanctions for ‘ongoing abuses’ after plane incident

White House says the US, the EU and other allies will target key members of President Lukashenko’s government

May 29 - The Biden administration has said it is drawing up a list of targeted sanctions against key members of the Belarusian government which forced the landing of a passenger jet and had a journalist on board arrested.

The White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Friday the United States was also suspending a 2019 agreement between Washington and Minsk that allowed carriers from each country to use the other’s airspace, and taking other actions against the government of President Alexander Lukashenko.

In a statement, she called on Lukashenko to allow a credible international investigation into the events of 23 May, when the Ryanair passenger jet flying from Greece to Lithuania was forced to land in Minsk.

Belarusian authorities scrambled a fighter jet and flagged what turned out to be a false bomb alert to force the plane to land, then detained the opposition journalist who was on board, drawing condemnation from Europe and the United States.

Psaki said the United States, with the EU and other allies, was developing a list of targeted sanctions against key members of Lukashenko’s government “associated with ongoing abuses of human rights and corruption, the falsification of the 2020 election, and the events of May 23”.

The EU has said it will provide Belarus with €3bn (£2.6bn) through grants and loans if the country “changes course” in an attempt to ramp up internal pressure on Lukashenko as he met Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday...     more

Statement by Press Secretary Jen Psaki on the United States Response to Belarus’s Forced Diversion of Ryanair Flight and Continuing Attack on Fundamental Freedoms

May 28, 2021 • Statements and Releases

Belarus’s forced diversion of a commercial Ryanair flight under false pretenses, traveling between two member states of the European Union, and the subsequent removal and arrest of Raman Pratasevich, a Belarusian journalist, are a direct affront to international norms. These events took place amid an escalating wave of repression by the Lukashenka regime against the aspirations of the people of Belarus for democracy and human rights. In response to the events of May 23 and the Lukashenka regime’s continuing attack on fundamental freedoms, the United States is taking the following actions:

The United States has joined the public condemnation of the events of May 23 at the United Nations (UN), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Group of Seven (G7), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). We will continue to advocate at these bodies for action against the Lukashenka regime for its affront to international norms and undermining of democracy and human rights.

US to re-impose sanctions on nine Belarusian state companies — White House
US persons will be prohibited from engaging in transactions with these entities, their property, or their interests in property

May 29 - The United States will renew its sanctions on nine Belarusian state-owned enterprises following the Ryanair plane incident, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

"On June 3, 2021, the United States will re-impose full blocking sanctions against nine Belarusian state-owned enterprises previously granted relief under a series of General Licenses by the Treasury Department," the statement says.
As a result of this measure, US persons will be prohibited from engaging in transactions with these entities, their property, or their interests in property.

Besides, the United States "in coordination with the EU and other partners and Allies" will develop sanctions against key Belarusian government officials whom Washington suspects of "ongoing abuses of human rights and corruption, the falsification of the 2020 election, and the events of May 23.".     source from

The Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK (Kurmanji KurdishPartîya Karkerên Kurdistanê[a]) is a Kurdish militant political organization and armed guerrilla movement, which has historically operated throughout Greater Kurdistan, but is now primarily based in the mountainous Kurdish-majority regions of southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq. Since 1984, the PKK has been involved in the Kurdish–Turkish conflict (with cease-fires in 1999–2004 and 2013–2015), utilizing asymmetric warfare to seek various goals, including an independent Kurdish state, autonomy and increased human rights for Kurds within Turkey....     more
US ending waiver for oil production in YPG/PKK-controlled Syria: Report

May 28 - The Biden administration has chosen to end a Trump-era waiver allowing for an American company to operate in Syria's YPG/PKK-controlled oil sector, according to a report published on May 27.

Rather than renewing the license for Delta Crescent Energy to operate in the country's northeast, U.S. President Joe Biden has chosen to let it lapse in a departure from ex-President Donald Trump's policy to "keep the oil" in Syria's petroleum-rich region, The Associated Press reported.

The pledge to use "the U.S. military to facilitate Syrian oil production was deemed inappropriate" by the Biden administration, according to the AP, which based its reporting on information from an anonymous official.

Jack Dorrier, one of the oil firm's three co-founders, told the AP that Delta Crescent Energy had roughly $2 billion in contracts to sell oil from northeast Syria to international buyers that he said would benefit U.S. allies in the fight to defeat Daesh/ISIS.

He said presidential orders issued under former President Barack Obama prompted companies to apply for waivers to operate in several Syrian sectors, including oil and gas.

"If the Biden Administration chooses not to renew the OFAC license, it will be a substantial change in policy that does not support Coalition Allies who fought and died to eliminate ISIS,” Dorrier said in a statement, using an acronym to refer to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, which manages the license.

“Depriving our Allies of the opportunity for sanctions relief on critical infrastructure as laid out by the Obama administration would, in effect, turn the North and East of Syria over to Russian, Regime and Iranian forces,” he added.

The region is controlled by the YPG, the Syrian affiliate of the PKK, a designated terror group in the U.S., EU and Turkey.

The AP separately reported that the company said it has not been notified by the Treasury Department that the waiver has not been renewed.

It is unclear if it has been formally told of the decision, and an anonymous former official familiar with the matter told the AP that the Biden administration informed Delta Crescent Energy that it did not intend to renew the waiver.     source from

Biden ending Trump OK for US oil company in Syria, says official

May 28 - The Biden administration has decided it will not renew a waiver that allowed a politically connected U.S. oil company to operate in northeast Syria under President Donald Trump’s pledge to “keep the oil” produced in the region, according to a U.S. official familiar with the decision.

Treasury Department rules prohibit most U.S. companies from doing business in Syria. The waiver for Delta Crescent Energy was issued in April 2020, months after Trump announced that he wanted to keep some U.S. troops in the oil-rich region to maintain control of the oil profits.

Trump’s “keep the oil” message was no longer U.S. foreign policy under the Biden administration, and using the U.S. military to facilitate Syrian oil production was deemed inappropriate, according to the official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the decision and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The company was founded in 2019 by James Cain, U.S. ambassador to Denmark under President George W. Bush; James Reese, a retired Army Delta Force officer; and John Dorrier Jr., a former executive with United Kingdom-based Gulfsands Petroleum. Cain, a onetime executive with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, has donated more than $30,000 to the Republican Party and GOP candidates over the years.

Northeastern Syria is the center for what remains of Syria’s oil industry. It is in shambles but remains one of the main sources of revenues for the Kurdish-led autonomous administration there.

Trump repeatedly spoke of keeping some U.S. troops in Syria to help “keep the oil” and “secure the oil,” but his aides sought to dispel the idea the United States was trying to profit from the region’s oil reserves. After DCE’s license, from the Office of Foreign Assets Control, to operate became public last August, the State Department issued a statement in which it underscored that the “United States government does not own, control, or manage the oil resources in Syria.”

Trump’s comments about Syria’s oil frustrated critics, and some allies, who said the loose talk fed into the narrative that American policy in the Middle East was driven by U.S. energy concerns and they argued it undercut U.S. diplomatic efforts to press for peace and stability in the region...     more
Damascus condemns "void agreement" between US company, SDF militants for stealing Syria oil
Aug 5, 2020

Syria has strongly condemned an agreement signed between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militant group and an American oil company aimed at stealing the country's oil, stressing that Damascus considers the contract null and void with no legal effect. On Sunday, Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates made the comments in a statement, carried by Syria's official news agency SANA, saying such a theft is carried out under the sponsorship and support of Washington. “Syria considers this agreement null and void, and has no legal effect while warning again that such despicable acts express the approach of those client militias, which have accepted to be a cheap puppet in the hands of the US occupation,” the statement said. On Thursday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed for the first time that a US oil company would begin work in SDF-controlled northeastern Syria, during his testimony to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “I talked to General Mazloum [Abdi] yesterday, with the SDF. Apparently they've signed a deal with an American oil company to modernize the oil fields in northeastern Syria. Are you supportive of that?” Senator Lindsay Graham asked Pompeo during the testimony, referring to the commander-in-chief of the US-backed SDF militant group. “We are,” Pompeo responded. “The deal took a little longer, Senator, than we had hoped, and now we’re in implementation.” It is, however, not clear which American company is involved in the illegal project and whether any other companies were given an exemption to US oil sanctions on the Arab country. US forces will keep control of Syrian oilfields: Pentagon The Pentagon says American forces will keep control of the oilfields in northeastern Syria to fund the Kurdish militia. Al-Monitor, citing unnamed sources, named the company in a report on Thursday as Delta Crescent Energy LLC, a corporation organized under the laws of the state of Delaware, without giving further details. Elsewhere in the statement on Sunday, the Syrian Foreign Ministry denounced the illegal agreement as an integrated and aggravated theft, describing it as a deal between thieves who are stealing and thieves who are buying. The ministry lambasted the agreement as an assault against Syria’s sovereignty and a continuation of the US hostile approach toward Syria. The ministry further slammed Washington for hindering the Syrian government’s efforts for rebuilding what has been destroyed by the foreign-led terrorism, which is “mostly backed by the US administration itself.” A US-led military coalition has been bombarding what it claimed as Daesh positions inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate. The strikes have on many occasions resulted in civilian casualties and failed to fulfill their declared aim of countering terrorism. The Syrian government has repeatedly condemned the airstrikes, stressing that they have not been authorized by the Syrian government or the UN Security Council. US threatens ‘military force’ against ‘any group’ challenging occupation of Syria oil fields The Pentagon threatens to use ‘military force’ against any group -- including Syrian and Russian forces -- seeking to challenge the US military’s occupation of oil fields in Syria. The US has long been providing the SDF with arms and militant training, calling them a key partner in the purported fight against the Daesh terrorist group. Many observers, however, see the support in the context of Washington's plans to carve out a foothold in the Arab country. That support has also angered Washington's NATO ally, Turkey, which views militants from the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) – the backbone of the SDF – as a terrorist organization tied to the homegrown Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) that has been engaged in a destructive war inside Turkey for decad

Blinken heads home after Middle East tour

May 27 - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken boards his plane upon departure from Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken headed home from Jordan Thursday after a whistlestop Middle East tour on which he called for regional cooperation to consolidate a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza militants.

Blinken met both Israeli and Palestinian leaders during two days of talks, throwing Washington’s support behind the Egyptian-brokered truce that ended 11 days of heavy Israeli bombing of Gaza and rocket fire from the impoverished coastal enclave into Israel.

For all the latest headlines follow our Google News channel online or via the app.
“Securing the ceasefire was important, particularly because of the devastating toll violence took on families on both sides,” Blinken told reporters after Wednesday talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman, his final stop.

“We see the ceasefire not as an end, but as a beginning of something to build on.”
Following talks with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Blinken vowed to rebuild US relations with the Palestinians by reopening a consulate in Jerusalem, as well as give millions in aid for the war-battered Gaza Strip.

The announcements signaled a break with US policy under former president Donald Trump, who had shuttered the diplomatic mission for Palestinians in 2019 and slashed aid to the Palestinian Authority.

After meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Blinken reiterated support for Israel’s right to defend itself against rocket attacks by Gaza’s Hamas rulers, adding that they must not benefit from reconstruction aid.
Hamas political chief Yahya Sinwar vowed not to take “a single cent” of the aid, insisting that “we have never taken a cent in the past."

Blinken also met Wednesday with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo, whom he praised for helping bring an end to the intense violence “relatively quickly."

Israeli air strikes and artillery fire on Gaza killed 254 Palestinians, including 66 children, and wounded more than 1,900 people in 11 days of conflict from May 10, the health ministry in Gaza says.

Rocket and other fire from Gaza claimed 12 lives in Israel, including one child and an Arab-Israeli teenager, an Israeli soldier, one Indian national and two Thai workers, medics say. Some 357 people in Israel were wounded.

The UN Human Rights Council will hold a special session focused on Israel Thursday to consider launching a broad, international investigation into abuses during the violence.

Blinken pledges aid to Gaza, affirms importance of two-state solution

Following a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says Washington will reopen its consulate in Jerusalem and restore ties with Palestinians.

May 27 - Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced plans to reopen a key diplomatic outreach office to the Palestinians and pledged nearly $40 million in new aid — reversing key policies of the Trump administration as he moved to bolster the embattled Palestinian government in the occupied West Bank.

On his first official visit to the region, Blinken met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders with the immediate aim of shoring up last week's cease-fire that ended 11 days of attacks between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

He vowed on Tuesday to “rally international support” for the effort while also promising to ensure that none of the aid would reach Hamas.

Blinken repeatedly alluded to the underlying issues of the decades-old conflict and expressed empathy for both sides, but he showed little interest in launching another US push for lasting peace, perhaps because previous efforts by past administrations have all failed.

Instead, he expressed hope for creating a “better environment” that might one day yield peace talks.

Despite these modest aims, Blinken made clear that President Joe Biden will pursue a more even-handed approach to the region than former President Donald Trump, who sided overwhelmingly with Israel in virtually every area of disagreement with the Palestinians...     more details

There are several ongoing efforts by scientists, governments, international organisations, and others to determine the origin of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. The scientific consensus is that the virus is most likely of zoonotic origin in a natural setting, from bats or another closely-related mammal.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

SARS-CoV-2 has close genetic similarity to multiple previously identified bat coronaviruses, suggesting it may have crossed over into humans from bats.[8][9][10][11][5] Research is ongoing as to whether SARS-CoV-2 came directly from bats or indirectly through any intermediate hosts.[12][13] Initial genome sequences of the virus showed little genetic diversity, although subsequently a number of stable variants emerged (some spreading more vigorously), indicating that the spillover event introducing SARS-CoV-2 to humans is likely to have occurred in late 2019.[14][15]

Health authorities and scientists internationally state that efforts to trace the specific geographic and taxonomic origins of SARS-CoV-2 could take years, and the results could be inconclusive.[16] A number of conspiracy theories have been promoted about the origins of the virus.[17][18][19] Echoing the views of scientists internationally, a World Health Organization (WHO) mission said that laboratory leak origin for the virus was "extremely unlikely",[17] supporting what most experts already expected about the likely natural origins of the virus and its early transmission.[20] The WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was ready to deploy additional missions for further investigation.     from Wikipedia

Statement by President Joe Biden on the Investigation into the Origins of COVID-19
MAY 26, 2021

Back in early 2020, when COVID-19 emerged, I called for the CDC to get access to China to learn about the virus so we could fight it more effectively. The failure to get our inspectors on the ground in those early months will always hamper any investigation into the origin of COVID-19.

Nevertheless, shortly after I became President, in March, I had my National Security Advisor task the Intelligence Community to prepare a report on their most up-to-date analysis of the origins of COVID-19, including whether it emerged from human contact with an infected animal or from a laboratory accident. I received that report earlier this month, and asked for additional follow-up. As of today, the U.S. Intelligence Community has “coalesced around two likely scenarios” but has not reached a definitive conclusion on this question. Here is their current position: “while two elements in the IC leans toward the former scenario and one leans more toward the latter – each with low or moderate confidence – the majority of elements do not believe there is sufficient information to assess one to be more likely than the other.”

I have now asked the Intelligence Community to redouble their efforts to collect and analyze information that could bring us closer to a definitive conclusion, and to report back to me in 90 days. As part of that report, I have asked for areas of further inquiry that may be required, including specific questions for China. I have also asked that this effort include work by our National Labs and other agencies of our government to augment the Intelligence Community’s efforts. And I have asked the Intelligence Community to keep Congress fully apprised of its work.

The United States will also keep working with like-minded partners around the world to press China to participate in a full, transparent, evidence-based international investigation and to provide access to all relevant data and evidence.     source from
