Taliban Advance On Major Afghan City
Aug 9, 2021
Kunduz, a key economic hub with 300,000 people, fell to the Taliban on Sunday. This is another blow to the country's crumbling security forces, who’ve lost control of at least three cities since Friday.
Taliban Warn Biden Against Interfering in Afghan Affairs - TV Report

This comes after the Biden administration launched airstrikes on the Taliban* fighters in northern Afghanistan on Saturday, as Islamists have continued the offensive, capturing new areas amid the rapid withdrawal of US forces.

Aug. 9 - The Taliban has issued a message to the United States warning Washington against any further interference in Afghanistan's internal affairs, a spokesperson for the movement's Political Office told Al Jazeera.

"We are warning against the US interference in Afghanistan," the spokesperson for the Taliban Political Office said, stressing that no intra-Afghan ceasefire had been reached.

He also accused the Afghan government of escalating the tensions in the country by launching operations in several provinces.

On Saturday, US B-52 Stratofortress bombers struck Taliban forces in Sheberghan city, Jawzjan province, causing casualties and inflicting significant damage on the terrorists, Afghan Defence Ministry spokesman Fawad Aman confirmed on Twitter.     source from

The Taliban Has Taken Key Northern Afghan Cities With Battles Raging On

Aug. 9 - Taliban fighters seized most of the capital of northern Afghanistan’s key Kunduz province on Sunday, and took another neighboring provincial capital after a monthlong siege. The advances were the latest in a series of blows to government forces as U.S. troops complete their pullout after nearly two decades in the country.

The militiamen planted their flag in the main square of Kunduz city, where it was seen flying atop a traffic police booth, a video obtained by the Associated Press showed.

It was the fourth provincial capital to largely succumb to Taliban fighters in less than a week, as they ramp up a push across Afghanistan’s regions, and wage an assassination campaign in the capital, Kabul...   more

Indian and Chinese Troops Disengage from Gogra

The establishment of buffer zones in areas of disengagement is eating into territory formerly under Indian control.

Aug. 8 - Six months after they stepped back on the north and south banks of Pangong Tso, Indian and Chinese troops have completed their disengagement from the Gogra area (Patrolling Point 17A) in eastern Ladakh.

“Both sides have ceased forward deployments in this area in a phased, coordinated and verified manner.
The disengagement process was carried out over two days i.e. 04 and 05 August 2021,” a statement issued by India’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) said.

The two sides have dismantled “all temporary structures and other allied infrastructure” erected in the area and “troops of both sides are now in their respective permanent bases,” the statement added.

The agreement on pullback of troops in the Gogra area, which was reached at the 12th round of talks between Corps Commanders of the two sides held on July 31, “ensures that the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in this area will be strictly observed and respected by both sides, and that there is no unilateral change in status quo.”
However, there is no statement from Beijing relating to the troop disengagement...     more

Strategic ambiguity or clarity? China’s power will crush all US’ Taiwan calculation

Aug 8 - With a policy of strategic ambiguity toward Taiwan, Washington has not clearly pledged whether or not to help defend the island in case of an attack. Although this current strategy has been frequently discussed and questioned by strategic circles in the US, it has remained intact following the normalization of Washington's diplomatic relations with Beijing in 1979... more

Stern message to China: Indian warships head to South China Sea

Four ships, including a guided missile destroyer and a missile frigate, will be deployed for a two-month period to southeast Asia, the South China Sea and the western Pacific, the navy said in the statement. The Indian ships will take part in annual joint war drills with countries part of Quad.

Aug. 5 - ..."The deployment of the Indian Navy ships seeks to underscore the operational reach, peaceful presence and solidarity with friendly countries towards ensuring good order in the maritime domain..." the navy said.

The Indian ships will take part in annual joint war drills involving the United States, Japan and Australia - the group known as Quad along with India - off the coast of Guam, the navy said. The Quad has emerged as a platform to counter an assertive China.

The mood of Indian navy has hardended following the clashes between Indian and Chinese militaries in Galwan in East Ladakh last year....     quoted from

US Warns About 'Rapid Growth' in China's Nuclear Arsenal

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in June that Beijing keeps its nuclear capabilities at a minimum level needed for national security.

Aug. 7 - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed grave concern Friday about what he described as China’s growing nuclear arsenal and told an annual regional security conference that the Asian superpower should also cease “provocative behavior” in the South China Sea.

America’s top diplomat raised these concerns during his first appearance in that role before the ASEAN Regional Forum, a virtual meeting that drew his counterparts from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations and 10 of the bloc’s dialogue partners, including China, Russia, Japan, and other world powers.

“The Secretary … noted deep concern with the rapid growth of the PRC’s [People’s Republic of China’s] nuclear arsenal which highlights how Beijing has sharply deviated from its decades-old nuclear strategy based on minimum deterrence,” the State Department said in a statement about Blinken’s participation at the meeting.

Blinken was referring to recent think-tank reports that said China was building more than 100 silos for nuclear missiles in its Gansu province and in eastern Xinjiang...     more

PH thanks US for affirming mutual defense pact

Aug. 7 - Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. has welcomed the United States’ reaffirmation of its obligations under the Mutual Defense Treaty, noting that the alliance is "vital" for stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Speaking at the virtual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Post-Ministerial Conference Session with the US on Aug. 4, Locsin also thanked the treaty ally for its open support for the 2016 arbitral award which invalidated China’s expansive claims over the South China Sea.

The conference session was attended by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Reiterating his previous statement before the virtual ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference Session with China, Locsin said the award is “most helpful in clarifying maritime issues” and that “only a bad conscience should feel aggrieved by it.”

“The award is the Philippines’ contribution to strengthening the legal order of the seas. It must be seen for what it is: a benefit to all the world across the board," the country's top diplomat said...     more

‘The US is ready’: Indo-Pacific Command leader confident in ability to defend Taiwan

Aug. 7 - The United States is capable of assisting and defending Taiwan in the event of a military crisis, the commander of all U.S. forces in the Pacific said Thursday.

“There is a narrative that we see often in the media that talks about the U.S. and the West in decline,” Adm. John Aquilino, head of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, said during a virtual appearance at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado when asked to describe America’s ability to defend Taiwan.
“I think what I’d start with is that that narrative is certainly being pushed by our adversaries,” Aquilino said. “I want to be very clear — we have the world’s greatest military on the planet.
“We are here to continue to operate to ensure peace and prosperity through the region, and we have to be in a position to ensure that status quo remains as it applies to Taiwan”...     more

U.S. Senate passes bill to help Taiwan regain WHO status

Aug. 7 - The U.S. Senate passed a bill late on Thursday calling on the State Department to submit a plan to help Taiwan regain its observer status at the World Health Organization, one of several U.S. bids to boost Taiwan as it faces pressure from Beijing.

Taiwan is excluded from most global organizations such as the WHO, the U.N. health agency, because of the objections of China, which considers the island one of its provinces and not a separate country.

The legislation, passed by unanimous consent, was sponsored by Senators Bob Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Jim Inhofe, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The two are also co-chairmen of the Senate Taiwan Caucus.

"The U.S. must continue to stand by Taiwan, and do more to reaffirm our support for our ally’s international engagement," Menendez said in a statement on Friday.

The measure directs the Secretary of State to establish a strategy for obtaining observer status at the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the WHO.

The House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee approved a similar bill earlier this year, but there has been no word on when the measure might come up for a vote in the full House.     source from

U.S. approves potential sale of howitzers to Taiwan – Pentagon

Aug. 5 - The U.S. State Department approved the potential sale of 40 155mm M109A6 Medium Self-Propelled Howitzer artillery systems to Taiwan in a deal valued at up to $750 million, the Pentagon said on Wednesday.

This comes after arms sales last year that included drones and coastal missile defenses meant to upgrade the island’s capabilities and discourage a Chinese invasion. The Biden administration has approved other direct commercial sales of arms to Taiwan since taking office.

The package would include the howitzers, 1,698 precision guidance kits for munitions, spares, training, ground stations and upgrades for Taiwan’s previous generation of howitzers, the Pentagon said.

The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of the possible sale on Wednesday.

Taiwan’s defense ministry expressed “sincere gratitude” to the U.S. government in a statement on Thursday, saying the sales would help its ground forces increase their “capacity for speedy reaction and fire support”.

The ministry called the continuous U.S. arms support a “basis for maintaining regional stability.”

China’s foreign ministry said it was “firmly opposed” to the sales and had lodged “stern representations” with the United States, according to comments from a spokesperson posted on the ministry’s website.

The sales interfered in China’s domestic affairs, the spokesperson said and warned that China would take countermeasures as the issue develops.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office reiterated a call for the United States to stop all arms sales to Taiwan so as not to send a wrong signal to Taiwan pro-independence forces...     more

White House Calls On States To Do More After Federal Eviction Ban Expires

Aug. 2 - The White House on Monday urged state and local governments to step up to prevent evictions, after a federal moratorium expired over the weekend.

Democratic allies have called on the Biden administration to extend the federal pause on evictions, but the White House maintains that its hands are tied by a June Supreme Court ruling.

Gene Sperling, a White House adviser, told reporters Monday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — which initially established the moratorium as a result of the coronavirus pandemic — had not found the legal authority to further extend the eviction measure.

"Given the rising urgency of the spread of the delta variant, the president has asked all of us, including the CDC, to do everything in our power, to look for every potential legal authority we can have to prevent evictions," Sperling said...     more

Expiration of eviction moratorium leaves White House and congressional Democrats scrambling

Aug. 3 - White House officials on Monday described a behind-the-scenes scramble over the weekend to locate any legal avenue for the administration to continue barring evictions.

The effort ultimately came up short, the officials said, leaving millions of renters in the lurch and exposing a rare divide with Democratic members of Congress.

"I don't think this means this President is going to give up," said Gene Sperling, the White House official responsible for managing coronavirus relief efforts, during an afternoon briefing. "I think he's going to keep looking, keep pushing."
Still, Sperling and other White House officials made clear that even after renewed examination, the President's authority to continue banning evictions was limited. Instead, the White House said it was working to prevent a major housing crisis by calling on states to accelerate rental assistance payments and pass their own laws banning evictions...     more

RA compelling case for COVID’s lab leak origin

Aug. 3 - ...Then on Oct. 18, 2019, athletes from around the world arrived in Wuhan for the Military World Games. A Luxembourg participant described Wuhan as a “ghost town” while there. He found it odd officials took his temperature when he arrived at the airport.

A Canadian athlete reported the city “was in lockdown” — in October 2019. He recounted he and 60 of his colleagues became sick 12 days after they arrived.

Athletes from Italy, Brazil, Sweden, and France also complained of COVID-like symptoms while in Wuhan. Each of these countries has since documented COVID-19 cases in their country before the outbreak became public in January 2020. In short, the Military World Games in Wuhan appears to have been the world’s first superspreader event.

February 2020, Chinese nationals with connections to WIV were reaching out to Western sympathizers, looking for allies in their effort to cover up COVID-19’s true origin. According to emails obtained by Republican staff, EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak became a leading collaborator with the Chinese government, acting as the mastermind behind a letter to The Lancet signed by 27 scientists, condemning “conspiracy theories suggesting COVID-19 does not have a natural origin.”

This letter was then used to suppress and silence voices in the U.S. media that suggested WIV might have been the source of the virus. In one email, Daszak even thanked National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci for going on television and “publicly standing up and stating that the scientific evidence supports a natural origin for COVID-19 ... not a lab release from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

Despite best efforts of the Chinese Communist Party, Dr. Daszak, and Dr. Fauci, the truth about the origins of COVID-19 is finally coming out...     quoted from
