Pompeo cancels Europe trip after reports of ‘snub’
US secretary of state planned to meet Nato officials and European leaders

Jan. 12 -
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is cancelling his final trip to Europe this week and will stay in Washington for the “completion of a smooth and orderly transition” to the administration of president-elect Joe Biden.

The State Department announced on Tuesday that all travel would be cancelled, including Mr Pompeo’s trip to Brussels where he was due to meet Nato officials.

“We are expecting shortly a plan from the incoming administration identifying the career officials who will remain in positions of responsibility on an acting basis until the Senate confirmation process is complete for incoming officials," the department said.

"As a result, we are cancelling all planned travel this week, including the secretary’s trip to Europe."   more details

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) listens during the nomination hearing of Kelly Craft, President Trump's nominee to be Representative to the United Nations, before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on June 19, 2019.
Cruz Office’s Contact Info Written In Note Found In Indicted Pro-Trump Rioter’s Truck

Jan 12 - Phone numbers belonging to two of Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) offices appeared to be listed as contact information in a note found in a truck belonging to Lonnie Coffman, who has been indicted for allegedly carrying unregistered firearms and 11 Molotov cocktails in that same vehicle during the pro-Trump insurrection last week.

New court documents that include photos of the truck and the items found inside the vehicle show a Motel 6 magazine with “Senator Ted Cruz” handwritten on the back next to two phone numbers. When called by TPM, the numbers connect to Cruz’s offices in D.C. and Central Texas.

The GOP senator’s name and numbers are written underneath “Conservative Talk Show Host Mark Levin” and “Shaun Hannity,” the latter appearing to be Fox News host Sean

The magazine found in the truck belonging to Coffman also included other scribblings, one with information about “elected representatives” — one of whom is described as a “Muslim” — and another that labeled a judge as a “bad guy.”
Cruz’s office did not immediately respond to TPM’s inquiry.

The Texas Republican has been slammed with calls to resign for fueling President Donald Trump’s attempt to delegitimize the election with inflammatory lies about voter fraud, which led directly to the violent insurrection that resulted in five deaths.     more details

The Twenty-fifth Amendment (Amendment XXV) to the United States Constitution deals with presidential succession and disability.
It clarifies that the vice president becomes president if the president dies, resigns, or is removed from office, and establishes how a vacancy in the office of the vice president can be filled.

It also provides for the temporary transfer of the president's powers and duties to the vice president, either on the initiative of the president alone or on the initiative of the vice president together with a majority of the president's cabinet. In either case, the vice president becomes acting president until the presidential powers and duties are returned to the president.

The amendment was submitted to the states on July 6, 1965, by the 89th Congress and was adopted on February 10, 1967, the day that the requisite number of states (38) had ratified it.     source from Wikipedia

The 25th Amendment isn’t impeachment-lite. We shouldn’t treat it that way.
Trump isn’t incapacitated. In his case, impeachment is the proper way to try removing him.

Jan. 12 - On Sunday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) wrote to congressional colleagues outlining steps that the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives plans this week. She called on Vice President Pence “to convene and mobilize the Cabinet to activate the 25th Amendment to declare the President incapable of executing the duties of his office.” On Monday, the House failed to pass, by unanimous consent, a resolution calling on Pence to “activate section 4 of the 25th Amendment,” but plans a floor vote on the measure Tuesday. On a parallel track, House Democrats introduced an article of impeachment, signaling a vote Wednesday if Pence doesn’t act in the interim.

Certainly, House members have grounds to act, but they’re taking a wrong turn: The 25th Amendment isn’t impeachment-lite. To remove President Trump, impeachment is the only correct constitutional mechanism.     continue to read

Pence has not ruled out 25th Amendment, source says

Jan. 10 - ..."As of Saturday evening, Trump and Pence still have not spoken since the Wednesday incursion at the US Capitol that left five people dead, including a Capitol Police officer, another source told CNN. The President has also not made any public comments denouncing death threats that have been posted on social media targeting Pence.

Pence has finally "gotten a glimpse of POTUS's vindictiveness," one source said, using the acronym for President of the United States.
Two sources familiar with the matter say Trump is angry at Pence and Pence is disappointed and saddened by Trump.

Trump put Pence in an impossible position, asking him to overturn the election results during Wednesday's joint session of Congress. When Pence explained that he could not do that and sent a letter to members of Congress that he would follow the Constitution, Trump used his Wednesday rally to egg on the crowd, telling them to march on Capitol Hill, and said of his vice president, "Mike Pence, I hope you're gonna stand up for the good of our Constitution and for the good of our country, and if you're not, I'm going to be very disappointed in you, I will tell you right now. I'm not hearing good stories."

As CNN previously reported, aides to the vice president were outraged that Trump did not check in on Pence on Wednesday as he and his family were fleeing from the mob storming the Capitol.

The fracture is the first time that Pence has disagreed with Trump publicly. Pence has always been one of the President's biggest defenders, often softening his harsh rhetoric and lobbying for his priorities quietly and behind the scenes on Capitol Hill -- while vocally supporting the President at rallies throughout the campaign.

For now, the source close to the vice president said Pence and his advisers hope to provide a bridge to the next administration and do as much as possible to assist President-elect Joe Biden's team in preparing for dealing with the coronavirus pandemic"...     continue to read

"Given the uncertainty, St. Louis Blues President and CEO Chris Zimmerman said the local NHL club is developing plans under the possibility that multiple scenarios could lie ahead.

'I tell people that how we are going to come back, as an industry, certainly at the start will largely be dependent where we are in the cycle of the health challenge,' said Zimmerman.

For now, it appears the Blues and St. Louis Cardinals will initially return to play without fans in attendance. The NHL and MLB are both exploring plans to stage games without fans, according to reports. Even so, the industry is already mulling over what new safety measures need to be in place when arenas and stadiums reopen to fans. "

Nye County GOP letter claiming 'It's 1776 all over again!' causes stir online

Jan. 10, NYE COUNTY (KTNV) — A letter was posted to the Nye County GOP's website on Jan. 8 that appears to double down on the claim that President Trump won the 2020 election over former Vice President Joe Biden.

The letter was attributed to the Nye County GOP Chairman Chris Zimmerman and says "Trump will be president for another four years. Biden will not be president."

The letter goes on to state that Trump never actually conceded the election but said only that there will be a peaceful transition to a new administration.

The author seems to take this to mean President Trump will remain in office while bringing on a new Vice President and cabinet, calling those people traitors.

The letter ends quote "The next 12 days will be something to tell the grandchildren! It's 1776 all over again!"     continue to read

Republican senator: White House aides say Trump was “delighted” as Capitol was stormed

Sen. Ben Sasse said that, according to senior White House officials, Trump was “confused” why others weren’t as excited.

Jan. 8 - ow did President Donald Trump react to the chaotic scene in which his supporters stormed the Capitol as Congress was preparing to formally approve President-elect Joe Biden’s win — a scene that eventually left five people dead?

“I don’t have any idea what was in his heart about what he wanted to happen once they were in the Capitol, but he wanted there to be chaos,” Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) said, during an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt Friday morning.

“And I’m sure you’ve also had conversations with other senior White House officials, as I have,” Sasse continued. “As this was unfolding on television, Donald Trump was walking around the White House confused about why other people on his team weren’t as excited as he was as you had rioters pushing against Capitol Police trying to get into the building.”

Biden introduces Merrick Garland as attorney general pick

Jan. 8, WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — President-elect Joe Biden introduced his pick for the nation’s top law enforcement official on Thursday, turning to experienced judge Merrick Garland to help de-politicize the Justice Department and restore the rule of law after what the incoming president described as four years of lawlessness under President Donald Trump.
Biden also described the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol on Wednesday as “domestic terrorists” and assailed the Republican president for inciting the siege.
“The past four years we’ve had a president who’s made his contempt for our democracy, our Constitution, the rule of law, clear in everything he has done,” Biden said, vowing a dramatic shift in his administration. “More than anything, we need to restore the honor, the integrity, the independence of the Department of Justice that’s been so badly damaged.”     continue to read

Merrick Brian Garland (born November 13, 1952) is an American lawyer and jurist who serves as a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He has served on that court since 1997. President-elect Joe Biden has selected Garland to be nominated as the United States Attorney General in the upcoming Biden administration.[1]
A native of the Chicago area, Garland attended Harvard University for his undergraduate and legal education. After serving as a law clerk to Judge Henry J. Friendly of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Justice William J. Brennan Jr. of the Supreme Court of the United States, he practiced corporate litigation at Arnold & Porter and worked as a federal prosecutor in the United States Department of Justice, where he played a leading role in the investigation and prosecution of the Oklahoma City bombers.

President Barack Obama, a Democratnominated Garland to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in March 2016 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Antonin Scalia. Despite Republicans themselves having spent years suggesting Garland as an acceptable Democratic choice,[2] the Senate Republican majority refused to hold a hearing or vote on this nomination made during the last year of Obama's presidency, with the Republican majority insisting that the next elected president should fill the vacancy. The unprecedented refusal of a Senate majority to consider the nomination was highly controversial. Some Republican lawmakers suggested leaving the court with just eight seats if Hillary Clinton were to be elected, saying they would block Garland or any other nominee and keep the seat vacant for at least another presidential term.[2] Garland's nomination lasted 293 days and expired on January 3, 2017, at the end of the 114th Congress. The seat for which Garland was nominated was eventually filled by Neil Gorsuch, appointed by President Donald Trump.     from Wikipedia
